LETTER: Parking fine a bad experience

Today [June 1] I received a parking fine from Athena stating that I had exceeded the free parking duration at Lidl in Seaside, Eastbourne.

It was my first visit to the store but I remembered the controversy over parking previously and purchased a couple of items. I gave my car registration to the man on the till twice as he got it wrong the first time. I was there for less than 30 minutes according to Athena.

I was told in the store that unless I had a receipt there was nothing they could do about it. Who keeps receipts for cash transactions below £5? Luckily our dustbin had not been emptied that day so managed to find the necessary proof of purchase. Yuck!

Needless to say that was my first and last visit to this store but just wanted to warn others that even if you give your car registration you may need your receipt to prove you were there as a customer and not a visitor. Not a nice experience for older customers who have done nothing wrong.
