The question of the European Parliament moving to Strasbourg posed by your reader J Luce [Letters, June 10] raises a very interesting point. The European Parliament moves to Strasbourg lock stock and barrel for one week in every month and not on an annual basis. They even built a high speed rail link especially for that purpose and the MEPs have a special train laid on for the return journey.
Virtually every hotel in Strasbourg is fully booked for the MEPs and their minions. We tried to book a hotel a few years ago and were not able to get a room until the last minute when one paid-up MEP reservation became vacant through non-appearance. The hotel told us in that way they were able to obtain payment for the room twice which was the usual practice. One can appreciate the wisdom in the EU refusing to publish any accounts for over two decades.
