Although I am not, and have never been, a supporter of the Conservative party I wholeheartedly back the stand taken by our MP Caroline Ansell, who I believe has been honest and courageous in her opposition to the Assisted Dying Bill. The attacks on her by a number of correspondents in your edition of September 4 seem to contain a dangerous whiff of anti-religious sentiment. This is quite explicit in the letter from S. Parlanti who writes: “One wonders how much Caroline’s religious views are the real reason for her not supporting the Bill.”
Maggie De Vos goes even further. She writes: “I would like to remind Mrs Ansell that she was not elected just to follow her conscience.”
God save us from politicians who do not follow their conscience!
