LETTER: Golden touch at Duke’s home

We have recently returned from a holiday in the Peak District, during which we visited Chatsworth House, home of the Duke of Devonshire. As part of extensive refurbishments to Chatsworth, the Duke has stripped off the paint on the windows and window sills, replacing it with gold leaf. He has also had the pinnacles on the roof covered in gold leaf. Splendid it all looked.

Now as we know, the Duke owns the freehold of large parts of Eastbourne. One has to wonder, if he had decided to purchase the pier and carry out the same treatment as Sheikh Abid Gulzar if there would have been the same outcry. I suspect not.
