LETTER: Giant, glittering cheesegrater

Writer Bill Bryson generally gives Eastbourne and the South Downs a good press.

It is the English who amuse him – their ability to huddle in a little wooden hut on a pebble beach in the rain with a cup of tea saying, “Ooh! This is lovely!”

But Mr Bryson is no fan of South Cliff Tower [famously describing it as ‘a charmless building that should never have been allowed’ in The Long Road to Little Dribbling].

Depending where you are, every morning and evening (when it is sunny) South Cliff Tower greets you like a giant, glittering cheesegrater.
