LETTER: Britain can be great again

What an excellent letter from your reader Hugh Weir in the Herald of April 29 [US Presidents and history]. If only others, to include 99 per cent of our politicians, had the guts to speak for Britain with the same strength of feeling and knowledge.

As an oldie who remembers the 1930s well, sadly a number of well-known Americans were very keen to limit the power of the British Empire. As history shows, the Second World War drained our resources and our empire. We were left poor, so they need not have worried.

We can be a very strong and advanced manufacturing industrial country again with a very active and creative investment in our old and new industries. Future Governments and our present one must tackle this as a major priority – something that they have failed to do since 1945. I want my country back! Free from Brussels, we can be great again, which is no doubt a worry to Obama, Germany, France and Europe in general. To do so we must have politicians that put country before pocket, something sadly lacking in the present parliament.
