I read, with interest, the letter [Herald, July 15] regarding the partaking of sustenance on Eastbourne Pier and wholly agree with the author Mrs Hoban. Why should the owner be entitled to impose conditions on how people behave on his property? This type of behaviour encourages democratic principles and is the sort of liberal rubbish that could lose us our glorious Empire.
Personally, I am surprised that nobody has picked up on the amount of seawater displaced by the structure of the pier beneath the waves and the limitations imposed by the ironwork of the pier which hampers swimming in that particular area.
Surely, the owner can afford to install an overhead cantilever suppport structure thus leaving the sea clear for the many swimmers who frequent the area?
In fact, could there not be a maternity hospital built on the site of the old Blue Room which would sort out the many trips to Hastings for those ladies with child as well as provide valuable income for the pier by the sale of nappies, nursing shields, gripe water etc and deter any potential picnickers. Let’s face it, several dozen screaming ankle-biters would put anybody off their rock salmon and chips!
