I WRITE to express gratitude to those recently involved in re-securing the town centre redevelopment plans, without which the town would have continued to struggle with larger competition from the likes of Brighton.
The news that Legal & General is still committed to our town is a huge boost to all those who trade here and is a real vote of confidence for our town.
No one would invest £70 million were they not sure Eastbourne is a great place.
The work that this project will generate for local tradesmen and firms will offer a tremendous boost to our local economy.
There will no doubt be an additional boost for local cafes and food shops as workmen take to the local stores for lunches and snacks too.
By providing new stores and increasing footfall from residents and visitors, independent shops such as mine and our members are likely to enjoy more shoppers and better sales.
Were this development to have failed or been sacrificed for the Sovereign Harbour development it is almost certain that many town centre independents would have struggled as shopper numbers fell.
Without doubt there would have been absolutely no provision for smaller independent stores at the Harbour leaving a very dull shopping landscape and who really wants the same shops as every other town?
