Eastbourne Road, Willingdon

Having read about the proposed bus lanes and improvements for Eastbourne Road last week and as a local resident I decided to take a look at the draft (or shall I say ‘daft’) plans.

We already have a cycle route which was put in only a few years ago no doubt at high cost and is used regularly so thought that cannot be it?

So I turned to look at the proposed ‘bus lane’ ...

Now according to the proposal we are going to save ‘43 seconds southbound and 16 seconds northbound’ in peak morning traffic, obviously not written by anyone who uses this road at peak time in the morning and spends 35 minutes trying to get out of Eastbourne on this road!

Then it said ‘74 seconds southbound and 58 seconds northbound’ on peak pm times, once again never spent the good 30 minutes it will take you to travel along this stretch at their allotted time.

So like a dog with a bone I delved deeper. There are a total of three buses that travel Eastbourne Road one of which turns off at The Triangle and does not re-appear until Polegate lights.

The two left run every hour so infrequent two buses are going to solve all the traffic problems on this road by having their own lane?

I can’t seem to find a total cost for all this ridiculous proposal of works but maybe sorting out the bottleneck at the traffic lights at Polegate/ A22/A27 might be a much better use of funds and actually sort out the traffic congestion instead of narrowing an already overused road?

Maybe if they have money to spare they could avoid shutting the libraries, don’t get me started on that ...
