I attended the Armed Forces Weekend at the Redoubt Fortress on June 24-26 and, although it was felt that the event was reasonably successful, the Drum Head Service on the Sunday morning was rather disappointing due to poor timing, nobody appearing to control the event and no relevant instructions being given to Standard Bearers.
The service itself was fine, although rather short – another hymn would have been nice. I also felt the Lord Lieutenant, as the Queen’s representative for Sussex, should have presented the veterans’ badges. He was the senior VIP present and more suitably dressed for the occasion.
Lastly, more a national comment – it is felt that Veterans’ Weekend is a far better title than Armed Forces Weekend. These are not just my feelings but the general opinion of veterans who were present on the day.
