The idea that 75 per cent of Eastbourne residents support cycling on the promenade is totally incorrect.
The population of Eastbourne is approx 100,000 and 579 questionnaires supported this proposal, which equates to one half of one percent – hardly an overwhelming majority!
The argument that Brighton and Worthing have similar shared use is irrelevant as both these promenades are much wider and have a clearly defined cycle path.
Even the most ardent cyclist must admit the section between the Pier and Redoubt Fort is far too narrow for shared use without risking accidents and injury to both pedestrians and cyclists.
I suggest members of Eastbourne Council and East Sussex Council go and observe this section to see how busy and congested it is on a busy weekend.
