I would like to personally invite Eastbourne Herald readers to celebrate Age Concern Eastbourne’s 65th birthday during a week of events at the William and Patricia Venton Centre, starting on Monday October 10.
As a truly independent charity, where every penny raised locally is spent helping the people of our town, we’re inviting local residents to help commemorate the good work the charity and its supporters have achieved since 1946.
To begin the birthday celebrations, we have launched a writing and photography competition to remember 1946, and are asking Herald readers to share their memories of the year through stories – between 300-1,000 words – and photos.
The winner will be announced and awarded £50 worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers at our 65th birthday party, on October 10 from 10am, at the centre.
The closing date is Wednesday October 6 and entries should be submitted to Ray Blakebrough at the William and Patricia Venton Centre, Junction Road, Eastbourne, BN21 3QY, or emailed to email@example.com. The best entries will be on show at the centre and on the website.
At the birthday party, swing band The Big Jazz will perform popular hits from the 1940s and 1950s and there will be complimentary teas, coffees and cupcakes courtesy of the Really Scrumptious Cake Company.
Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd and deputy mayor Mike Thompson will be there to cut the giant cupcake birthday cake.
On Tuesday October 11, ESK will host an arts and craft demonstration; Wednesday is World Celebration Day with Eastbourne Cultural Community Network; Thursday is ‘40s and ‘50s movies day, and Hillier gardening expert Andy McIndoe will give a talk on the Friday. To round off the week, Age Concern will be at Banker’s Corner on Saturday October 15 with the Scout’s band, The King Fishers. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
