AS I walked through the busy town centre last Friday I saw the Herald headlines stating “High Street hit by new store woes” and on a lamp post nearby a placard advertising a continental market on the seafront.
Why hold the market on the seafront?
It seems to me that it would be far more sensible to bring it into the retail area of the town centre to attract more shoppers to visit our shops and to increase footfall there!
I understand that there are bye laws in place regarding vehicle loading that make it difficult to hold markets on the precinct.
Surely Eastbourne Borough Council can talk with the Highways Department at East Sussex County Council to look for a solution?
I have read the Town Centre Action Plan Consultation Document and look forward to hearing more about it and its vision, and I was pleased to hear that we are not faring as badly as other towns in Sussex – although the current uncertainty about the future of some stores must be very worrying for the many people employed in them.
To continue to keep our town centre vibrant and to protect traders the Action Plan needs to start now!
