The hashtag #YoureHiredES became a talking point among businesses and young apprentices. Sussex Downs College, who work to bridge the gap between the two were at the forefront of the East Sussex County Council campaign.

The aim is to have 500 businesses across the five districts and boroughs of the county to pledge to hire an apprentice. The ‘500 in five’ is a five-month campaign, and thanks to a successful launch last week, nearly half of the 500 target has already been met, with pledges from 228 businesses. Jemma McCarthy, 18, secured an apprenticeship with Concept Hairdressing in Stone Cross, through Sussex Downs College. Jemma has now been taken on as a permanent stylist at the salon.
