EASTBOURNE’S war hero Joe Townsend was one of the stars of the spectacular opening ceremony at the Paralympic Games on Wednesday night.

The Royal Marine brought the Paralympic Flame into the Olympic Stadium to help light the cauldron.

Twenty-four-year-old Joe, a double amputee who lost both legs when he stood on an anti-tank mine in Afghanistan, zipwired into the London venue after being nominated by Help for Heroes, the national charity which helps wounded service personnel.
