Businesses, charities and participants of Stephen Lloyd’s ‘100x3’ work experience programme for local people who are long-term unemployed came together to celebrate the success of the scheme and toast the employers and participants who took part.
The programme, supported by the local Job Centre Plus and led by the MP, saw Eastbourne work together to secure 100 hours of work experience for 100 people who had faced long-term employment, within 100 days.
This aim was far surpassed and in fact, 187 placements were found, which has led to some very positive results.
Mr Lloyd said, “A packed event at the View Hotel celebrated the success of Eastbourne’s 100x3 work experience initiative.
“In partnership with our local Job Centre Plus, I knew that if we were to help people back into employment after a long time out of work, we needed to persuade companies and organisations locally to give people an opportunity to undertake work experience, enabling them to get back into the discipline and habits of the workplace.
“The results have been simply astonishing – 187 placements have been filled so far, with 60 people going on to employment. This means 32% of local residents who had been long-term unemployed – a really difficult cycle to break – have now found new jobs because of our scheme.
“Compare this figure with an average of only 4.2% on the Government’s £1.4bn Work Programme!”
