Sales assistant Elaine Acland was able to say a big thank you to the charity that helped her win a new job at the launch of this year’s Win A Car event in the Eastbourne Arndale Centre.

Elaine, now employed by Marks & Spencer, was recruited by the store after an event organised by charity, People Matter, that gives advice, guidance and practical help to job seekers in and around Eastbourne.

Marks & Spencer manager Graham Paine, who also attended the launch, said, “Elaine was just one of four employees we took on from People Matter so it was a fantastic result for us.

“We were delighted with the input from the charity which saved us a lot of time in going through the job application process to find the right people.”

People Matter, the first charity to take part in the Christmas Win A Car 2013 event, has helped more than 10,000 people since its launch in 1997.

A team of volunteers was in the Centre to sell tickets at £1 each that will give one lucky winner a brand new Suzuki Splash, worth more than £9,000, for Christmas.

A total of 48 charities will benefit from the event that has raised an amazing £230,000 since its launch in 2000.

Every penny from the sale of tickets goes directly to the charities that each have a day in the Centre until December 24.

The charities that will be in the Centre for the coming week will be: Lark in the Park (today); Eastbourne & District Girl Guides (tomorrow); Eastbourne & District Scouts (Sunday); East Sussex Foster Care Association (Monday); ESDA (Tuesday); Care for the Carers (Wednesday); Eastbourne Shopmobility (Thursday).
