EASTBOURNE’S British Bookshops and Stationers is among the 22 shops to be taken over in a £1.05 million buy-out by WH Smith.
The Eastbourne branch, in Terminus Road, is one of the shops across Sussex, Surrey and Kent, which has been bought by the retail giant after the chain went into administration in January.
The 22 stores, including branches in Hailsham and Seaford, will continue to trade under the British Bookshops brand, with new owners undertaking a phased take-over programme starting on February 22. Recovery specialists Zolfo Cooper said it was actively pursuing options for the remaining 29 branches of the chain.
Simon Appell, partner at Zolfo Cooper, said, “We are pleased to have been able to safeguard the iconic British Bookshops & Stationers brand through the sale of 22 stores. We would like to thank all staff across the business for their continued professionalism during this difficult period and wish British Bookshops & Stationers all the best moving forwards.”
