Four overseas visitors from Belarus were rescued by Eastbourne’s lifeboat last night (Tuesday) after they become trapped below the cliffs at Beachy Head by the rising tide.
The lifeboat was initially called into action by Dover Coastguard at 6.38pm to recover a body from the beach at the foot of cliffs.
But while it was there, the coastguard received a message from the survey vessel Wessex Explorer saying crew members had seen four people evidently cut off by the rising tide near the Beachy Head Lighthouse.
The lifeboat collected the four walkers from the beach and took them back to the Lifeboat Station at Sovereign Harbour.
An RNLI spokesman later thanked the crew of Wessex Explorer for their vigilance saying that without their help the walkers might well have spent many uncomfortable hours trapped on the beach.
