A VITAL service which helps old and disabled people deal with repairs and adaptations to their homes is to close because of cutbacks.
Eastbourne Care & Repair has been hit by cuts in funding to home improvement agencies from both East Sussex County Council and Eastbourne Borough Council and says because it will no longer receive funding from the two councils, no new cases will be taken on and the service will be forced to close by the end of March.
Mike Stone, chair of Care & Repair, said, “It is very disappointing that after 23 years we are unable to continue this very necessary service.
“Since the service began in 1988 we have helped thousands of people to repair or adapt their property and remain in their own home.
“It is not always the very major repairs that cause worry and concern, but often just the general maintenance.
“We have given many people the confidence to continue to live in their own home because they know that Care & Repair is on hand to help with small repairs as well as larger works.
“The need for this service continues and we will be looking at how the needs of older people with disrepair or adaptation problems in Eastbourne may be met in the future.”
