Visitors to popular spot urged to clean up their rubbish

Visitors to Eastbourne seafront are being reminded to take their rubbish with them or dispose of it in a bin after litter was strewn across the Italian Gardens.

The rubbish, including carrier bags and food packets, was spread across the popular spot in the Holywell area of the seafront.

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said, “The Eastbourne Herald reported the litter at the Italian Gardens at 12.36pm on Thursday (27 June). There had been no previous reports received. The Neighbourhood First Team were advised immediately. All the offending refuse was removed by (13.20).

“It appears the litter came from some blacks bags, possibly from a group picnic, that had been left by bins in the area and subsequently ripped open by seagulls and foxes.

“If people have a picnic on the seafront they must put their black bags into a bin or, if they can’t fit the waste into a bin, take it home with them. Members of the public can report litter to the Council’s Customer First operations centre on 01323 410000.

“In addition to this reporting system Eastbourne Borough Council is soon to launch a new mobile app that will allow people to instantly report any litter problem they see using their smartphone.”
