Dramatic images released by Eastbourne RNLI show the challenging conditions faced by lifeboat crews during a late night cargo ship rescue on Sunday (December 6).
The EMS Majestic, an Antigua-Barbuda-flagged cargo ship, began taking on water off the coast of Eastbourne at around 7pm leading to a major rescue operation.
Eastbourne RNLI all-weather lifeboat went to the vessel’s aid and helped with the evacuation of crew members throughout the night along with two coastguard helicopters from Lee-on-Solent and Lydd.
A short video captured by RNLI volunteer crew member Alex Emberley shows the near pitch black conditions rescuers faced when attempting to aid the stricken vessel.
The ship was able to reactive its water pumps and avoid sinking after putting out a mayday signal for help.
A tug also answered the mayday and towed the ship to Portsmouth Harbour, where it is undergoing repairs.
