From next month people living near Seaford, Forest Row and Wadhurst household waste recycling sites will find they now have shorter hours in which to get rid of their rubbish.

Changes are being made to the days of the week that Veolia-operated sites near the three communities are open. Other sites will not be affected.

Starting on October 6 the three sites will open from Friday to Sunday. New hours will be from Monday to Thursday: closed. On Friday and Saturday: 8am to 4pm. Sunday: 9am-4pm.

East Sussex County Council says reduced opening times at these sites are part of the Council’s overall savings programme.

A County Council spokesman said, “While closing them for four days a week will not fully meet all residents’ expectations, the County Council has listened to local views to develop a plan which balances the need to make savings with local need for services.”

He said that both Forest Row and Wadhurst handle a relatively small amount of waste compared with other equivalent sites which makes them a less cost-effective way of handling waste flows.

The improved recycling collection service in Wealden means people in this area should now have a good range of recycling options on their doorstep instead of having to drive to a recycling site.

They point out the Seaford site is less than five miles from Newhaven’s household waste recycling site, which is a new, purpose-built split-level site. Seaford’s site is also a small, older site without the modern, split-level layout.

From Monday to Thursday residents can use any of the other nine household waste recycling sites in East Sussex and the nearest alternative sites to Forest Row and Wadhurst are: Crowborough - Farningham Road, TN6 2JR. This site will be open from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and on Saturday and Sunday 9am-1pm. It will close on bank holidays.

Maresfield - Batts Bridge Road, TN22 2HN. This site will be open from Monday to Saturday 8-4pm and on Sunday 9-4pm. It will open for the usual hours on bank holidays.

The nearest alternative site from Seaford is New Road, Newhaven, BN9 0EH.

This site will be open from Monday to Saturday 8am-4pm and Sunday 9am-4pm and then open for the usual hours on bank holidays
