Vandals target cars in Lower Meads

MINDLESS vandals slashed the tyres and roofs of five cars.

Police are seeking information about a spate of damage to cars in the Lower Meads area of Eastbourne over one night.

At 4.40am on Thursday 19 July, a car was reported to be on fire in Compton Place Road, having been stolen further along the same road, and four other cars were subsequently reported by the owners to have been damaged by having their soft top roofs slashed, in Spencer Road, Blackwater Road, and in Compton Place Road.

It is believed that the four cars were damaged sometime between the late evening of Wednesday 18 July and the time at which the car fire was reported on Thursday morning.

PC Dan Cloake, operations co-ordinator for Eastbourne said, “We believe these five mindless crimes are linked. At this stage there have been no arrests and we urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area that night to contact us as soon as possible on 101 quoting serial 0132 of 19/07. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Anyone seeking crime prevention advice can also contact their local neighbourhood officer via 101.

“We also recommend that other owners of convertibles with a soft tops in the area ensure they are kept in a garage if at all possible for the time being.

“Extra officers are now being deployed in the area at night to prevent any further such incidents.”
