A care home worker has been shortlisted for the Great British Care Awards for a newsletter project.
Val Larkin, who works at Oak Lodge in Polegate, was chosen for the Care Innovator category thanks to a monthly magazine she creates for staff, residents and their families.
She assembles the newsletter – that features news and around 100 photographs involving Oak Lodge and sister home Hillview – in her own time. Earlier this month Val appeared before a panel of judges ahead of the award finals at a gala evening at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on November 8.
“I can’t tell you how thrilled I am,” said Val, who lives in Eastbourne.
“I do the magazine because I get a great kick out of it and people seem to enjoy it. I never imagined I’d be shortlisted a million years!”
Her all-singing-all-dancing newsletter celebrates every achievement – holidays, birthdays, ‘new kids on the block’, gardening, cooking, art sessions, ‘wet Bank Holiday barbecues’, days out, fire drills, and even the cat-across-the-road who ‘likes to strike a pose’.
All the photos taken for the newsletter run on a loop on a screen in the home’s foyer area, while a photocopy of the publication is on display at the entrance.
