The mineral oil was found over a week ago, and stretches across the coastline from Worthing to Dover.

It is believed the substance is harmful to small children and dogs, and an operation began on Monday to remove it.

It is not hazardous unless digested, but the public are being warned to keep their children and pets away from the coastline and not to touch solidified particles on the beach.

A spokesperson for Adur and Worthing Council said: “The clean up continues along the coastline, with huge progress being made in the past four days. As the particles change and becomes smaller to pick up, due to changing weather conditions, Adur & Worthing Council will be deploying double the cleaning work force this coming Saturday and Sunday.”

People are encouraged to report further incidents to the council on 01903 239999 or to the Environment Agency via their 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060.
