A body has been recovered from Beachy Head this morning (March 30).

Police were first called to the area at 7.30pm on Tuesday (March 29) after reports a woman may have fallen from the cliff top.

Police and coastguards searched the area but stood down at 11pm when darkness and weather conditions prevented the search continuing.

The search was resumed on Wednesday morning (March 30) and at around 11am a man’s body was found at the foot of cliffs.

The coroner’s office has been informed.

A further sweep of the area was made but no one else was found.

Inspector Mark Boughton, of Sussex Police, said, “We’ve double checked, but at this stage it would seem that the body recovered is one and the same. The sighting last night was at a distance in failing light and it may be that the informant was mistaken over the person’s sex.

“Efforts are now being made to identify the recovered body.”
