A 26-year-old man was caught painting offensive swear words on a ramp at the seafront skate park on Sunday (July 7).

A passerby called police to report that he had just witnessed the graffiti at the Sovereign skate park and officers arrived minutes later.

A man was found nearby with similar paint on his hands. He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and when being questioned he admitted the offence.

Officers liaised with Eastbourne Borough Council, who own the skate park, and it was decided that the matter be dealt with by way of community resolution. The man was ordered to pay £40 to cover the cost of repainting the ramp.

Sergeant Julian Williams, from Eastbourne Neighbourhood Police Team, said, “We are grateful to the member of the public who made the effort to report the crime as quickly as possible which allowed officers to attend and make a swift arrest.

“Sussex Police will not tolerate mindless criminal damage to public areas that have been created for the enjoyment of the local community.

“If you see anyone defacing property please call 101 as soon as you can - so we can attend and catch the culprit(s) in the act.”
