Eastbourne can now officially boast one of the best Italian delis in the country after Il Gusto won a prestigious award earlier this month.

The Grove Road eatery won a Bertolli Spread Olive D’Oro Award after coming second in the Best Deli Dish category following a national poll.

The Bertolli Spread Olive D’oro Awards acknowledge and celebrate the most authentic Italian delis in the country and Il Gusto triumphed over thousands of others to collect the accolade.

The awards are divided into six categories, including Best Family Run Deli, Best Customer Service, Best Produce and Best Deli Cafe. However, it was in the Best Deli Dish section that Il Gusto succeeded courtesy of its mouth-watering lasagne, which was tried and tasted by Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd last week.

Awards ambassador Gennaro Contaldo says, “The Bertolli Spread Olive D’Oro Awards are a fitting celebration of these treasure troves, packed full of the best Italian delicacies.

“The winning delis and runners up share Bertolli’s values of quality and authenticity, giving customers a truly Italian experience you don’t get anywhere other than the streets of Italy itself.

“We are proud to reward them with an Bertolli Spread Olive D’Oro Award.”

Despite being beaten to first place in the Best Dish category by Piccola Italia in Worthing, Il Gusto’s Brian Blaney was understandably very proud to receive such a renowned award as well, declaring it ‘absolutely brilliant’.

Il Gusto Gastronomico also serves coffee, homemade cakes and freshly-made paninis.
