Annie Murray, a PE teacher at Bishop Bell School, spent Easter in The Gambia representing the Football 4 Peace initiative.
Football 4 Peace International (F4P) is an activity-based community relations and reconciliation initiative. Sports coaches, community leaders and volunteers work alongside each other bringing differing communities together through a variety of sports and aspects of outdoor education.
Annie said, “The trip was an opportunity for us to set up projects in towns and villages across The Gambia to promote the values of respect, responsibility, trust, equality and inclusion through sport.”
The project began in 2001 bringing together Jewish and Arab communities in Israel and today has worked and impacted on programmes in Jordan, Palestine, South Africa, Germany, Ireland, Northern Ireland and England. Annie’s tasks ranged from leading lectures on safeguarding, educating local sports coaches to coaching a local men’s football team (pictured). All volunteers were made to feel extremely welcome and had a fantastic experience.
