Swimmer’s happiness led to lifeboat false alarm

THE JOYOUS yells of an early morning sea swimmer who found himself alongside a seal alerted lifeboat crews on Friday morning (August 24).

Both Eastbourne and Hastings inshore lifeboats were launched at 8.30am after a concerned onlooker alerted Dover Coastguard that two people were in the water and one was frantically calling for help.

When the volunteer crews arrived on scene it was discovered that the early morning swimmer had found he was swimming with a playful seal.

Bob Jeffery, from Eastbourne Lifeboats, said, “He was so thrilled with the experience that he couldn’t help but yell out with sheer joy.”
Both lifeboats returned to the stations and the incident was logged as a false alarm with good intent.
