A SWIMMER had to be rescued from the sea by lifeboat crews as it started to get dark on Monday evening (August 20).
Anglers on the beach near the entrance channel to Sovereign Harbour called Dover Coastguard at around 8.45pm when a swimmer entered the water but quickly disappeared from view in the gathering evening gloom.
Eastbourne volunteer lifeboat crew launched to the scene within four minutes but were unable to locate the man at first.
They eventually found him hiding behind one of the channel markers.
The man was known to the crew as someone who has previously undertaken similar escapades in adverse weather conditions.
He was taken ashore but refused to wait for a Coastguard officer.
