Sussex Downs College pupils are celebrating  their A Level success after the college achieved a 98.3 pass rate, its best performance in five years.

The number of students receiving grades A* and A was up 10 per cent from last year and students securing high grades of A* - B was up 3 per cent from last year at 44 per cent.

High achievers include A Level student Ryan Turner, 18, from Eastbourne. Ryan studied maths, biology and physical education at the Eastbourne campus. He achieved A* grades in all three subjects and will study physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham this September.

Reuben Scott, 18, also from Eastbourne, achieved AAB in his science A Levels, winning a place at University College London. He said: “It’s a very happy day. biology, chemistry and physics aren’t light subjects so I am so pleased with these results.”

English language and literature also saw success. Emily Crudge, 18, from Hailsham, opened her results on campus this morning. She said: “I got an A* and A. I am now going to study English literature at the University of Warwick and I can’t wait.

Principal and chief executive of Sussex Downs College Mike Hopkins said: “The staff and governors of Sussex Downs College offer their whole-hearted congratulations to these brilliant students. They can now leave the college looking forward to their futures.

“The College has committed itself to being amongst the best in the region and country; these results reflect its capacity to achieve this ambition. I wish to thank all the staff in their efforts.

“We now have nearly 1,000 A Level and BTEC students progressing to university with great careers ahead of them. I am utterly delighted for them.

“I am looking forward to the start of the next academic year and welcoming the next cohort of students to the Sussex Downs College family”, Mike said.

Chair of governors Henry Ball said: “I am very pleased that the students have achieved so much. I wish them well in their futures. I also pass on my congratulations to staff for their efforts which have ensured the College’s best performance for five years.”

Nearly 1,000 students have secured the grades needed for their place at university this summer with many more headed for apprenticeships and careers in their chosen field.

Sam Alvarez, programme manager for business at Sussex Downs College said: “We are so proud of our students. We have had fantastic results in A Level Accounting this year, with more A grades than ever before. We have students progressing to university and apprenticeships, including Ellen Gee, who has started an apprenticeship with Price & Co.

"Ellen is so dedicated and hardworking and will return to college in September to complete her apprenticeship.”
