Organisers of the Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival have secured a major coup just a fortnight from the big event by landing backing for the showpiece event.
Legal & General was this week unveiled as the sponsor for this year’s Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival which takes to the streets on May 25
Owners of the Eastbourne Arndale Centre, Legal & General is planning to extend the Centre with a £70 million scheme that will bring up to 22 new ground and first floor units, plus additional car parking, to the town.
The scheme, that is welcomed by Eastbourne Borough Council, will rejuvenate the town centre and have a much-needed economic effect.
Simon Russian, head of retail development at Legal & General Property, said, “We are delighted to be involved in this year’s carnival which made a welcome return to the town last year.
“From our point of view, it is great to be part of a community event which brings people together and raises the profile of Eastbourne.
“We have been working very closely with Stephen Lloyd, who led the campaign to bring back the carnival last year, so when he approached us about getting involved with the event, we were very pleased to be part of it.
“Eastbourne is a great town, with a lot to offer, and this year’s Carnival looks set to be a fantastic draw for both local residents and visitors alike.”
Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd said, “It is tremendous to have the support of Legal & General on such a key event for our town. The Sunshine Carnival 2013, promises to be even bigger and better than last year.”
Legal & General hopes to announce the signing of key anchor tenants, who have committed to the Arndale extension, in the near future.
The plan is for the initial work on the scheme to start during 2014, with completion in 2016.
Organisers are hoping that the sun shines and that thousands of people will flock to the event which is in its second year since being reintroduced 12 months ago.
Last year’s Carnival was a great success, with more than 1,500 walkers taking part and with some 25,000 fans and supporters.
The theme for this year’s Carnival is Sussex By The Sea.
The route of the carnival will be from Fisherman’s Green to the Western Lawns, and there will be live music and entertainment throughout the day.
