A group of first-year university students showed their generosity this festive season by donating more than £500 to the local foodbank.
The students, who study at the University of Brighton’s Eastbourne campus and stay in Welkin halls of residence, were invited to a toga party during a ‘Freshtival’ event to mark the first fortnight of their time at university.
With a cupboard full of unusable linens, staff at Welkin Halls offered the old white sheets – used for fashioning toga-style costumes – to the students for free in return for donations.
Generous donations by the students saw them raise a pleasing total of £523, which was donated to Eastbourne Foodbank.
Upon receiving the cheque, Howard Wardle, manager of the foodbank, said, “Any money raised at this time of the year invaluable, as Christmas is always a particular drain on our resources.
“We are in desperate need of toiletries and baby supplies. The university’s donation will go a long way towards helping those in need of such basic items.”
Welkin Halls is owned and run by Viridian Housing.
