Four overseas visitors from Belarus were rescued by Eastbourne’s lifeboat on Tuesday night after they become trapped below the cliffs at Beachy Head by the rising tide.

They were spotted near the Beachy Head Lighthouse by crew members on the survey vessel Wessex Explorer and the alarm raised with the coastguard which then called the lifeboat into action.

The lifeboat collected the four walkers from the beach and took them back to the Lifeboat Station at Sovereign Harbour.

An RNLI spokesman later thanked the crew of Wessex Explorer for their vigilance saying that without their help the walkers might well have spent many uncomfortable hours trapped on the beach.
