Stone Cross, Westham and Hankham - February 6, 2008

Community news and events from Stone Cross, Westham and Hankham.

ST LUKE'S PARISH CENTRE has a new parish administrator, Steve Carpenter, who will be in the Parish Office in Stone Cross every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am until at least 11am and on Sundays from 12noon to 1pm. This will make it easier for people to enquire about activities at St Luke's or make a hall booking. The office telephone number is 01323 767020 and there is an answerphone for other times.

ON FRIDAY January 25, three of the Year 6 children from Hankham School took part in the annual Young Engineers Challenge. There were a total of 17 local primary and secondary schools taking part in this competition which had been organised by the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership and was held at St Bede's School in Eastbourne.

The team of Maddie, Tom and Barnaby took on the challenge of designing and making a wheeled vehicle, capable of 'leaping the canyon'. Points were awarded for design, innovation and the distance traveled by the vehicle. The design team was also required to be able to discuss their work with questions being put by the judges. Obviously the team was very knowledgeable with some brilliant ideas of how to carry out the requirements of the challenge and the school was delighted to receive the news that they had been placed 2nd overall – a truly excellent result. It was reported by Mrs Hale, who accompanied them, that the team was commended, not only on their team work, but also on their exemplary behaviour throughout the competition. Well done to them and many congratulations.

ASH WEDNESDAY FALLS THIS year on February 6 (today) and St Luke's Church in Stone Cross will be holding a Sung Mass with Imposition of Ashes at 7.30pm.

YET ANOTHER MILESTONE WAS reached by Hankham School last Friday (February 1) when the school celebrated its 129th anniversary of its foundation. The school is very proud of its heritage as one of the oldest primary schools in East Sussex. The head teacher wishes to thank all children, staff, parents and friends for their continuing support and co-operation.

THERE WILL BE A book and bric-a-brac sale in St Luke's Parish Centre on Saturday February 16 from 10am-12noon. Entrance is free so go along and see the extensive array of bargains. Refreshments will be available.

AN UPDATE ON THE situation regarding the local bus services: The transport partnership is still looking for more drivers and telephone message takers so that it can run a viable service for the residents of both Westham and Pevensey parishes. As the changeover date of February 11 approaches, Rover 6 (the clever bus that comes when you call) is being transformed into a Community Bus-Link.

It will be staffed by volunteers from in and around Westham and Pevensey parishes. Thanks to their generous help the partnership expects to be able to offer a service on Tuesdays to link up places within the two parishes and reach Langney Shopping Centre where there are connections to a good number of commercial bus services: and on Wednesdays to reach out to Hailsham as well. The telephone number 0845 606 6951, the Rover 6 number, will be kept. Only bookings for next day will be accepted, so remember to book today for tomorrow. Lines will be open for booking and for any cancellations on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The telephone will be answered by local residents who have kindly volunteered to do the job. Volunteers are the backbone of the service, and more volunteers are needed before the partnership can offer the service on more than two days. To offer a service on five days a week, 20 names are needed on the list. This would allow each volunteer to do some occasional half-day shifts each month. At the moment there are eight volunteer drivers. Even harder to find are volunteers to do a shift taking telephone bookings. At the moment there are eight names on the list.

Volunteer drivers are getting practice and are assessed to ensure a proper standard by qualified members of the Cuckmere Community Bus team. Answering the telephone is relatively simpler. Practice sessions have been well attended and volunteers are also practising on their own. There is also a learning pack. To find out more about how you can help with this valuable public service please call Michael Nash on 01323 760496 or Joyce Richards on 01323 763344, e-mail joyce.richards@hankham2.co.uk or write c/o Westham Parish Office, Stone Cross, Pevensey, BN24 5EF.

The application is with the traffic commissioner for approval. As soon as confirmation has been received, the information will be available locally, for residents to pick up, at parish offices, Stone Cross Memorial Hall, Westham Village Hall, Pevensey Bay Information Centre, Ethel Wood Community Centre, St Wilfrid's Hall, the medical centres at Stone Cross, Westham and Richmond Road, at Church Bailey, Westham Post Office, Laura Hairdresser, and other local service and retail businesses. Westham & Pevensey Local Transport Partnership is now a company limited by guarantee and will shortly be seeking charitable status. Thanks for advice and help are due to East Sussex County Council passenger transport officers, to the Cuckmere Community Bus team, and to Eastbourne Buses whose project manager and team of drivers have taken care of all the Rover 6 passengers up to now.

I REALISE THAT THE time for making New Year Resolutions is well past but how about making a belated one now and offer your name as a volunteer, either as a driver or as a telephone message taker. Contact details are as shown above.
