Eastbourne’s Steampunk Festival is back next month.

The annual event, based on a unique sub-genre of science fiction, comes to Eastbourne’s seafront on September 12 and 13.

It celebrates a fantasy era which sees the Victorian period meeting with the cyber-world, in which festival goers can escape into a quirky unknown universe.

Visitors to Eastbourne over the weekend of 12 and 13 September can step into a world of curiosities and wonders, as entertainers, traders, dancers and more, dressed head to toe in Steampunk attire; will fill Eastbourne’s seafront from the Wish Tower slopes to the Bandstand, bringing the imagination of Steampunk to life.

From mad scientists to time travellers, the promenade will be filled with eye-catching and mind-boggling costumes, as Steampunk fanatics take the opportunity to live the lives of their cyber Victorian alter egos through eccentric and experimental dress.

Cllr Margaret Bannister, Eastbourne Borough Council lead cabinet member for tourism, said, “Steampunk is an extremely unique festival and adds an extra element of quirkiness to Eastbourne’s packed events calendar.

“Events with a difference continue throughout the autumn, from the large bonfire procession in October to mark the arrival of bonfire season, to the extremely popular Eastbourne Beer Festival and WynterCon, a convention for people with interests a little out of this world; there are plenty of reasons to visit Eastbourne this autumn.”

Steampunk is a very family friendly festival and visitors will find plenty to keep all ages entertained and the imaginations of young children expanded, with umbrella jousting, tea duelling, corset limbo, crockery smashing and face-painting stalls, Steampunk mixes the imagination of the gaming world with some traditional activities of the Victorian era.

Entertainment comes in the form of magicians, Elemental circus performers, 1066 Falconry, fairground rides, Active Cherry pole-dancing and live music performed by local bands between 10am and 5pm on both days on a live music stage sponsored by Chapel Motorhomes.

On the evening of September 12 the Steampunk Fundraising Masquerade Ball takes place at the Winter Garden.
