The emotional Starlight Stroll event in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and in memory of lost loved ones returns to Eastbourne seafront next month.
Every year, St Wilfrid’s Hospice holds a sponsored walk in September.
Last year, the Eastbourne hospice changed the format of the walk to the Starlight Stroll – a four-mile walk along the seafront, from the Redoubt Fortress to Holywell, and back, taking place in the early evening.
Liz Silvester, from the hospice, said, “Almost 750 people took part, making it the hospice’s most well-attended event ever.
“This year, when we repeat Starlight Stroll, we’re hoping to break that record.
“What really captured people’s hearts and minds was the memorial garden at the halfway point.”
As part of registration, participants were sent a paper bag lantern which they were invited to decorate or dedicate and bring with them on the walk. At the Italian Gardens at Holywell, a team of staff and volunteers from the hospice handed out tealights to put in the bags, which were then placed on the grass to create a beautiful glowing garden.
Liz said it was an emotional experience for many.
She said, “All those who attended found this magical and moving in equal measure and spent time chatting to others before heading back to the Redoubt.
“I took part in the walk myself and was surprised at how moving the garden was.
“During registration, and just before the walk, a team from More Radio led a warm up at the Redoubt and really rallied the crowd, creating a fun, upbeat atmosphere before we set off on the walk. The contrast, then, in the calm of the Italian Gardens with all the beautiful lanterns really took my breath away.
“It was an arresting sight causing everyone to stop and think and remember.
“It’s something I look forward to again this year and it would be great if you could join us.”
St Wilfrid’s Hospice Starlight Stroll takes place on Saturday, September 17, setting off from the Redoubt at 6.30pm. Registration costs £15 and includes a t-shirt and lantern.
Liz added, “I hope to see you there as our supporters are the biggest stars of all.”
