Eastbourne Herald reporter Joanne Smith visited the DGH on Wednesday (May 15) to speak with staff about the changes at the hospital.
Earlier this month the hospital became a stand alone midwifery-led maternity unit and there has also been changes at the Friston Ward which mean children are no longer able to stay overnight.
Darren Grayson, chief executive of East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, has defended the move and said the temporary measure was made on the basis of patient safety.
While at the hospital our reporter videoed a midwifery matron called Becky Collins who spoke of the changes and the facilities available at the DGH. A woman in labour at the DGH who needs to be transferred to the Conquest Hospital would be transferred by ambulance with a midwife.
The ward matron for Friston Ward Liz Vaughan said it had been a big change but that things had been ‘working quite well’.
