St Andrew’s School pupils took part in a sponsored walk to raise money for the JPK Project.

The school in Meads was helped by the Rotary Club of Eastbourne Sovereign with its fundraising effort and a cheque for £1,750 was presented to Jill Parker, chair of the JPK Project, recently.

The annual sponsored walk saw pupils and parents trekking from St Andrew’s Prep to Birling Gap and back.

The event take place early in the autumn term to help new pupils build friendships.

The JPK Sussex Project was the school’s chosen charity for this year’s event and Jill Parker described the school’s contribution to the charity as ‘magnificent’.

The cheque was presented to Jill on November 17 by Simon Severino, headmaster, and Derek Morley, president of Eastbourne Sovereign.

Mr Morley, “For many years I have been aware of the work of Jill in the community for people with a learning disability and especially lately with regard to The JPK Sussex Project.

“It is a pleasure for Simon Severino and me to be able to hand over this donation, to this very worthwhile project, which will meet a great need.”

Jill said ”We have come a long way over the last 12 years having purchased an ideal site in Old Town and having received planning consent.

“We could not have achieved this stage without the support of so many people.

“However, we now have a mammoth task to raise the capital required to commence building.

“This wonderful donation will go directly into our building fund. My grateful thanks to St Andrew’s Prep, Rotary Club of Eastbourne Sovereign, pupils and especially the parents who gave so generously.

“You have all made a difference.”

Mrs Parker is working tirelessly to build a residential centre for people with learning disabilities on the old Edgmond Church site in Old Town.

The site will not only provide accommodation and carers but work experience at the tea rooms, bakery and charity shop on site.
