A DAY aimed at attracting volunteers for a charity has been hailed as a success.
Newhaven RNLI held the event at its lifeboat station in a bid to gain support from people who were willing to become fundraisers, sea safety advisors, crew members, education speakers or volunteers for the small retail outlet at the station.
Coxswain Ian Johns was assisted by the crew and RNLI regional officials during the day.
There were more than 18 applicants for lifeboat crew members, three people were interested in joining the RNLI as sea safety advisors and 29 interested parties completed the recruitment forms for the various fundraising positions.
Coxswain Ian Johns said, “The event created a wonderful atmosphere between the crew and the volunteers and we were impressed with the number of local residents that were willing to help.
“So much so, that shortly the retail outlet at the station will be open seven days a week between 10am and 4pm, all these sales of RNLI souvenirs contribute to the running costs of the Newhaven lifeboat station.”
If anyone was unable to attend the open day and wishes to volunteer their services to help the RNLI, they can contact the RNLI Newhaven boathouse on 01273 514143.
