Spain’s best poet remembered in rare evening of dance

A THEATRICAL flamenco-dance spectacular of a sort rarely seen in the UK is to be staged at the Eastbourne Under Ground Theatre for one night only on August 16 (7.45pm).

Lament for Lorca is dedicated to the memory of Spain’s greatest modern poet and playwright, Federico Garcia Lorca, who was assassinated by fascists in the opening days of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, Lorca distilled into his works the very essence of Spain and his native Andalusia, the searing heat and riotous colours, the joys and passions, the comedies and tragedies.

Now, leading international flamenco-dance company Cancion Gitana have created a unique dance biography of the brief, extraordinary, life of this remarkable poet, his friendships with artists Bunuel and Dali, his fascination with gypsy culture and his passionate love of fiery flamenco dance and song.

The result is a bewildering swirl of changing scenery and changing costumes, narration and poetry in Spanish and English, film projections and dramatic lighting, in a passionate re-telling of the life and death of an artist destroyed by savage forces as the country he loved was torn apart.

Tickets cost £16, buy by e-mail via duendeflamenco@aol.com or by phone on 07758752257 or 07963959262, or on the door on the night.
