EASTBOURNE writer Michael Fleming has won the Chelmsford Festival Short Story Competition with his entry Benchmarks.

The story centres on a fictitious character who places the inscriptions on the benches sited on Eastbourne’s promenade.

Eastbourne features prominently in it, with references to Holywell Beach, the Town Hall, Old Town and the Cavendish Hotel.

Michael, a member of the Anderida Writers in Eastbourne, is intending to include the story in a collection planned to be published in a new book later this year.

Anderida Writers meet on the second Tuesday of each month at Eastbourne Seniors Club in Cornfield Lane, off South Street, at 7.30pm.

Guests are welcome, and prospective new members can contact chairman Tony Flood on 471726.
