Shakers will take you to the 1980s

THE ACCLAIMED Hull Truck Theatre returns to the Devonshire Park Theatre this autumn (November 3-7) with another acutely observed comedy, Shakers, written by John Godber and Jane Thornton.

Come on a retro-filled trip back to the 80s this autumn to the coolest cocktail bar in town.

This classic from the award-winning husband and wife team of John Godber and Jane Thornton offers a great party night out for all those with fond memories of the decade that taste forgot – including huge mobile phones, yuppies, puff balll skirts and legwarmers.

It is happy hour at Shakers, the trendy high-street bar with the neon sign, and the four waitresses – Nicky, Adele, Carol, Mel – are busy serving up cocktails of Vodka Hula and Southern Gin Cooler.

In the bar we meet the girls out for a 21st to remember, a group of boys downing shooters and the posh theatre crowd – all told in typical fast-paced Hull Truck style.

The show was first staged in 1985 and is often considered to be a female version of John's most successful play, Bouncers.

Jane suggested writing Shakers when she was performing in a tour of Up 'n' Under, which was being performed in tandem with Bouncers.

Having seen the amazing reaction that her husband's nightclub-based play was getting, Jane suggested that they collaborate on a female version, and the rest is history.

Performances are at 7.45pm, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets cost from 13.50-19.50, call 412000.
