Second man charged with Waitrose robbery in Eastbourne

A second man has appeared in court charged with robbery following an attack on a cash in transit van outside Waitrose supermarket in High Street, Eastbourne, in April.

John Hayward, 44, of Sutton Avenue, Seaford, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance at crown court on August 2.

Billy Kevin Brown, 31, of Coronation Gardens, Battle, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Friday also charged with robbery and was remanded in appear at a crown court on July 19.

A 36-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of the same offence was released on police bail until July while enquiries continue.

Two staff from the van were at the cashpoint at the store when they were approached by two men who said they had a gun and demanded cash. The staff refused to hand over the cash and the men ran off towards the store’s car park.
