THE SEARCH has begun for young sporting stars in East Sussex whose achievements deserve official recognition.
East Sussex County Council is once again looking to put the sporting achievements of the county’s young people firmly in the spotlight with its annual sports awards.
The council is appealing for nominations for a 2011 Sports Development Award under a scheme which recognises and celebrates the achievements of young people in sport.
Under the scheme the council’s PE and School Sport Team last year distributed more than 200 awards to young people in the county.
Cllr David Elkin, the County Council’s Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said, “We run these awards every year to recognise the sporting talents and achievements of so many young people in the county.
“Of course the main aim is to give these young people our official and public congratulations and praise.
“But we also hope that the small grants we provide help to support them as they pursue their sporting ambitions.”
The closing date for nominations and applications is January 28.
The applications will then be assessed and the awards will be made at a special evening to celebrate the sporting successes of the county’s young people which will be held in the spring.
To qualify for an award, the young person must meet the following criteria:
r Be aged over 11 and under 19 on August 31;
r Attend an East Sussex Children’s Services Authority maintained secondary school, community college or special school;
r Compete in his/her respective sport at county (ie representing county), regional (representing a region, eg the south east) or national level (representing a country);
r Compete in a sport recognised by Sport England.
