Seaford Choral Society’s first concert of the 2014/15 season will take place under the invigorating leadership of our new Music Director, Anna Tabor.
A varied programme of shorter seasonal music will be performed by the Choir at St Leonard’s Church, Seaford, on Saturday, November 29 (7.30pm), together with soprano, tenor and bass soloists, and ably accompanied by Nick Houghton on the organ.
The concert will feature Franz Schubert’s ‘Mass in G’. The most familiar and popular of his masses, it was finished in six days in March 1815, for a performance in the Lichenthal Church, outside Vienna, where he sang as a choirboy.
Gerald Finzi’s ‘In Terra Pax’ was completed in 1956 and is his reflection on the Christmas story, using extracts from St Luke’s gospel and a poem by Robert Bridges to recreate the nativity of the English countryside, with shepherds abiding in the fields of the Cotswolds.
Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ was written in 1912 and is based on four English folk carols, including the Sussex Carol.
Also on the programme is Hector Berlioz’s ‘The Shepherds’ Farewell’. Berlioz produced the oratorio ‘L’Enfance du Christ’ in 1854 and this, the best known section, tells of the shepherds saying goodbye to the baby Jesus as he leaves Bethlehem for Egypt with Mary and Joseph to avoid the slaughter of newborn children in Judaea by King Herod.
A retiring collection will give everyone an opportunity to support the St James’ Trust (Seaford), an independent charity, staffed entirely by volunteers, who run or host a range of groups and activities which cater for elderly or disabled local people.
Tickets priced at £10 are now available from sponsors Newberry Tully Estate Agents, 52 Church Street, from the Secretary of Seaford Choral Society (01323 482387), members of the Choir, or at the door on the evening of the concert.
