Seaford has set up a conversation group for German speakers to ensure the future of its link with twin town Bönningstedt.

Seaford’s Twinning Association signed historic Twinning Charters with the German town in both towns in 1984.

The 30th Anniversary has just been celebrated, with 40 visitors from Seaford including the Silver Band travelling to Germany.

Association chairman Peter White said, “Many of the original members are no longer with us, and as German is not taught in many Seaford schools there is less interest from the young in visiting Germany. It also has to compete with Spanish beaches, Alpine slopes and adventure holidays in today’s widening world.”

The Twinning Association has started a Plauschgruppe, a Conversation Group for German speakers. So far 74 people have expressed interest, and the monthly meetings in pubs and cafes have attracted up to 40 people. They speak, sing, cook and make visits using German as the ‘lingua franca’. Members have all standards of German, and all sorts of backgrounds, but enjoy speaking the language.

On September 5 the Seaford Twinning Association has its AGM, at 7.45pm in the Claremont Hall. As well as the usual bring-and-share American Supper, (bring your own drinks), raffle and review of the twinning visit this year, the brief business meeting will be asked to consider putting the STA and Plauschgruppe together. This joint group could look forward to a monthly language meeting, and a monthly social event.

The visits to and from the twin town would continue. There would be joint events also: currently suggested are an Oktoberfest Evening, and a Stall at Seaford’s Christmas Magic event on December 6.
