Seaford and District Horticultural Society enjoy a day at the docks

ON June 17 a party of 43 members of the Seaford and District Horticultural Society travelled to the Historic Dockyard at Chatham for what was an interesting and most informative day.

The day started with a pleasant ride across the Sussex and Kent countryside courtesy of Lynn's Coaches.

The tour first gave people a potted history and overview of the dockyard enabling them to choose which parts they would like to explore in more detail.

Many members found the RNLI shed of great interest and it was fascinating to see such a selection of lifeboats of which some relied on manpower and oars to operate.

The visit to the "ropery" where rope is still made for historic ships was enlightening.

Another optional tour was a visit to HM Submarine Ocelot when the official trainee tour guide was ably assisted by the society's own ex submariner!

Anyone wanting information about joining the society should call Lesley Lambert on 491167.
